A Foundation of Herbalists:
About our Founders, Our Mission and Philosophy

 Nome McBride, Head Herbalist, Botanist, brings to the table an experienced and richly diverse background in all aspects of our company’s production, as well as a strong foundation in herbal medicines and their clinical uses and indications.  He has been trained in the use of European herbs by The Academy of Scottish Herbalism, and trained in field botany and native plants of the Northwest by The Columbine’s School of Botanical Studies.  Nome has also had personal training in phytochemistry, anatomy and physiology.  Much of Nome’s free time is spent reading texts from yesteryear in search of insights applicable to modern day herbal needs, and reinforcing what the plants have continually taught him through his clinical family health-care practice.   Nome grew up farming and has had extensive experience and education specifically on organic and sustainable farming practices.  Nome teaches all over the Northwest and is respected in the herbal community for his unique, but incredibly concise and relevant approach to herbal healthcare.  In addition to being a founder of Under the Yew, Nome is also a founder of the Institute of Contemporary Ethnobotany, and a founding member of the Northwest Sustainable Wildcrafter’s Guild.

 Carissa McBride, LMT, CNA, adds her experience from years of clinical work to the company.  Carissa grew up in the lush foothills of Mt. Hood, a child of nature since birth.  She has fostered and developed her connection with plants over the years and is especially good as using the herbs in her healing practices with her clients.  She began formal training in Botany in 2000 and has been fascinated with all the edible and medicinal plants around her ever since.  Before long she was inspired to learn more about using plants as food and medicine and graduated from the Academy of Scottish Herbalism in 2003.  Carissa has integrated essential oils, infused oils, and internal extracts with her clients ever since and found amazing results.  Areas she specializes in are sports massage, Swedish massage, hot rocks/towels, trigger point therapy, cranial sacral, aromatherapy, and chiropractic adjunct massage.

 Peter McGlenn, Tracker, brings his knowledge of both plants and animals with him to Under the Yew.  Peter has lived in the Pacific Northwest his whole life, originating from West Seattle and the banks of Puget Sound.  With a love for native fauna and flora, his work is constantly all around him.  Besides being a founder, Peter serves as our wildcrafting assistant manager, spending most of his time in the forest searching for medicinals to collect and monitoring our stands for sustainability, wildlife interaction, and impact.  He started his tracking career long ago and has fostered it since youth.  He eventually attended Tom Brown Jr.’s famous Tracker School in almost all of their locations and is now a volunteer staff in many of their programs.  Since completion of the Tracker School coursework Peter has enrolled at Evergreen College in Olympia to pursue a personalized degree in tracking.  His awareness of animal signs and plant communities allows us to locate and transit large amounts of medicinal herbs much faster than using botany alone.  Peter has studied with Seattle area herbalists, as well as with the Tracker School, the uses of Native American edible and medicinal plants and lends knowledge and insight into new product possibilities.  Peter spends much of his time in the Puget Sound area and is our Washington representative.
 Our Mission
 To get a person to know an herb that suites them, and to then respect Mother Earth from where it came;
These are our highest hopes.

Our Mission:
+ Strengthening the connection between people, place, and plants by supplying the highest quality herbal products to the marketplace.
+ Dedication to sustainable agriculture and wildcrafting, creating greater harvests for years to come.
+ Educating our community both locally and in the herbal world to create a future that weaves our elders’ traditional knowledge with the science and ethnobotany of today.

 Our Philosophy
 As an “Apothecary of Farm and Forest”, we specialize in botanicals either organically grown or in natural  abundance here in the Pacific Northwest.  Our two 5.5 acre farm patches are nestled at the southern end of the Willamette Valley on deep alluvial soils.  Being situated where the Valley transitions into the majestic Cascade Mountain Range, we have easy access to vast stands of wildcrafted medicinals we pick and tend.  Just minutes away, our Processing Lab completes the cycle of the Field to Pharmacy Process.

Under the Yew’s Apothecary is created from botanicals that are locally producible. We use only the highest quality raw plant material available, harvested by our own crews at the peak of potency.  Our products are freshly produced and deepen the connection between people and place.

We are meticulous with our herbs- from saving and sowing seeds, during long hours of processing, right through to the last drop in the bottle.  We are thoughtful and concerned for your health and safety.   Premium Quality products represent Under the Yew’s dedication to our Clients.
